The 999 Club provides immediate help in any situation as well as long term support and friendship to the most disadvantaged or vulnerable members of society – the homeless, the addicted, those with mental health issues, ex-offenders and the elderly. We operate 2 day centres in 2 of the London Borough of Lewisham’s 4 most deprived neighbourhoods.
Run by frontline staff and volunteers comprised of local people the centres offer daytime respite to our users, who face a multiplicity of problems. Much of our service is about offering company and friendship to these isolated individuals and key to this is the constant provision of tea, toast and a laundry service. On top of this we offer information advice and referrals with regard to subjects such as accommodation, detoxification and healthcare. Our Deptford Centre also provides a nursery for some of London’s most vulnerable children, whose parents visit our centres. Everyyear we will provide a 10 week night shelter after Christmas, when Crisis shelter is no longer available and when the winter cold really bites

We intend to make our expertise, experience and commitment available in other areas of need, reasonably close at hand initially, and – if we are successful – to expand geographically in the longer term.
We see ourselves best able to help disadvantaged people by sticking to what we are good at – helping people to help themselves – and thus, growing “horizontally, rather than “vertically’. Our role will continue for the foreseeable future as it is now, providing sanctuary for those in need, acting as a referral agency for damaged people in need of specialised counselling or other treatment, and working in partnership with other agencies that can provide ongoing support to those who come through our doors.
