Every 21 minutes someone in the UK is diagnosed with leukaemia or a related illness. In fact over 24,000 people are directly affected every year from communities around the UK inculding your own.
For many of these adults and children a bone marrow transplant represents the only cure. Without a transplant they will simply not survive.
The Anthony Nolan Trust takes back lives from leukaemia by maintaining the UK’s largest bone marrow register. Each individual on our register is willing to donate their bone marrow to save the life of a person they have never met.
In 2003 by ‘matching’ volunteer donors and patients Anthony Nolan saved the lives of an amazing 463 adults and children.
We work hard to ensure as many of adults and children as possible survive by continuously enlarging our register and recruiting more volunteers. Our register can never be large enough. If you are aged between 18 and 40 you may be able to join it ?
For every new volunteer we add to our register we have to find £70.
Our life saving work is only made possible thanks to the generous support individuals like you and your colleagues. Please give generously to help us save lives. |

The work of Anthony Nolan saves hundreds of lives every year by providing bone marrow donors. Not enough people however are on our register, we are only able to respond positively to half of the patients that need us.
Our aim is to continue recruiting more people to our register so that every adult and child in need of a life saving transplant is given the best possible chance in live.
Simultaneously our world-class research institute makes advances in cancer treatment; improves the success rate of transplants and continues to search for a cure.
With additional funding we could do so much more. |

1) Donor Recruitment
Continuous maintenance and enlargement of the UK’s largest register of potential bone marrow donors. Through the organisation of ‘recruitment clinics’ held in offices and public spaces throughout the UK. Our professionally trained staff educate, motivate and engage members of the public to join our register. If matched each volunteer could go on to save someone life.
2) Donor Registration
Our laboratory staff use advanced high resolution technology to test and type the blood samples taken from new volunteers. Each new sample is coded and entered onto our database so that they can be specifically matched with patients in need.
3) Donor Tracing and Counselling
Every time a adult or child needs a transplant our donor matching and tracing teams search both our register and those of our international partners to find a suitable match. We then attempt to locate, trace and counsel the potential donor. We fully support them and provide counselling where necessary.
4) Co-ordination and Financial Support
We arrange all the logistics and provide full financial support and advice for the donor once they have agreed to undergo the procedure to save somones life. This includes transport costs, accommodation and full reimbursement of wages. It can often involve our staff travelling abroad to personally collect and subsequently deliver bone marrow from an overseas donor to a UK patient.
5) Donor Welfare
Post procedure we provide professionally trained counsellors to deliver aftercare services for donors in order to ensure fast and full recovery, to answer any outstanding questions and to co-ordinate contact with patients.
6) Patient Support
We produce literature that provides patients with clear advice, information and support to help them and their families through this difficult time. Our website also acts as a gateway to further information and sources of support.
7) Medical Research
Our medical research pioneers ground-breaking research into the prevention, treatment and cure of all blood cancers, our research aims to minimise the side effects of transplants and ultimately works towards providing a cure
